The Counselling Relationship

Hi there folks

As a person - centred counsellor I thought it would be a good idea to have a look at the difference between a therapeutic relationship and a relationship you may have with a loved one or friend. The truth is, both relationships can be really valuable however they offer very different kinds of support. If  you are lucky  you may have people in your life that can offer support and love you deeply throughout your life . They can offer you a shared history that can provide both comfort and practical support as part of an emotional connection. "Our" people often walk with us in life caring deeply about our wellbeing and often wanting the very best for us whilst sharing in our lives and experiences.

So what does a counsellor do ? The role of a counsellor in its simplest terms is a person who provides a space for you to speak confidentially within therapeutic boundaries. These boundaries can include time, frequency of sessions,  choice of counselling methods such as telephone, online, or face- to- face with your counsellor.  All in accordance with their professional body for example the (BACP) . Why see a counsellor? Unlike a personal relationship the counselling relationship is carefully put together to support your own emotional exploration without judgement and with acceptance. In essence A counsellor is not emotionally involved in your day-to-day life,  and this can create an environment for deeper reflection, honesty and an opportunity to understand yourself more clearly.

This being said counselling it is not about replacing the important people in your life it's more about helping  you strengthen your relationships by helping to raise you own awareness in a safe place to talk. You deserve support that meets your needs and counselling can provide both professional and emotional support that is different to talking to loved ones and friends.
